My guess is that maybe the cap wasn’t on tight enough... or the rubber gasket on the cap has seen better days. It doesn’t need to get melting hot for it to build up pressure enough to blow the cap off.

To be fair in 4 years of ownership this is the only time it’s risen above 110C. But all british cars have their time.
